Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

A new treatment for Depression

TMS is a relatively new, but well proven, treatment for depression. It is a safe and non-invasive alternative to anti-depressants or talking therapy.

It works by delivering repeated trains of magnetic pulses into the brain, targeted to stimulate and modulate activity of the cells in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, a small frontal section of the brain responsible for the regulation of mood.

Successful TMS treatment requires repeated sessions, usually 30, delivered over between three and six weeks. Each session typically lasts 40 minutes. Sessions take place at our Shrewsbury offices.

Upon completion of the initial programme, some people find it helpful to occasionally return for maintenance treatment if symptoms return, but this is not the norm.

We are firm believers in the effectiveness of TMS in treating depression. It has been shown to be highly effective in up to 70 per cent of cases. Post treatment, the symptoms don’t generally return. The treatment is safe, reliable, free from pain and discomfort.

Compared to drug treatment, there are far fewer and less troublesome side-effects, if any. It can be used in conjunction with existing medication, so the withdrawal from drug treatment can be managed safely.

TMS is suitable for treating depression in almost all adult cases. It is an effective alternative to drug treatment, especially for those who are unable to tolerate the side effects of anti-depressants, or who simply prefer an alternative.

If you wish to consider TMS treatment, an initial consultation will determine its suitability for you. There are very few contraindications.
