Background and Symptoms

Self-esteem is the opinion that we have of ourselves. Having a low self-esteem is having a low opinion of yourself which tends to be negative and critical to the point where it impacts our ability to overcome the challenges of day-to-day life and / or achieve our potential.

Numerous factors can play a part in causing issues and difficulties with self-esteem.

Early childhood experiences can often be at the root of aspects of our self-esteem as these experiences can be the foundational building blocks on which we build our understanding of environment, other people, and ourselves. However, experiences and other factors that contribute to shaping our self-worth can occur at any time and can include such things as:

  • Chemical imbalances in the brain
